Mentally, Emotionally and Economically Disadvantaged (MEED)              by Angela Micelli Suarez

A single person and / or the nucleus family who is challenged mentally, emotionally and / or economically. Any one or combination of the three challenges that puts the single person and / or the nucleus family at a disadvantage with mainstream society, and has a negative impact on their own lives and on mainstream society.

I believe the mind, emotions and economic state of a single person and / or the nucleus family is entwined in such a way, when one or more of the three states are challenged, this cause has a ripple effect which creates the MEED state of being. And, I believe the MEED state of being is experienced by not only the single person, but by all of the nucleus family, especially when they cohabitate simultaneously.

When a person has what is commonly referred to as a mental illness, western traditional methods of treatment and management many times become so expensive, that it is economically unfeasible to continue long-term. And though, many times, long-term western traditional treatment may be the most effective method of managing symptoms of a serious and chronic mental illness, unless one has extremely good comprehensive medical insurance and born with a silver spoon in their mouth, funds eventually become depleted. And, then the single person and / or nucleus family become economically disadvantaged.

When a person has what is commonly referred to as an emotional imbalance, or what I refer to as an emotional disadvantage, the same scenario many times happens. Then, not only can the single person and / or nucleus family become economically disadvantaged, but one or more may experience a triggering effect from the state of emotional disadvantage combined with the additional economical disadvantage and become mentally ill.

When a single person and / or a nucleus family is economically disadvantaged, especially when basic survival needs of food, shelter and clothing are non-existent, severely threatened of depletion, or perceived to be so, many times this causes the effect of an emotional disadvantage.

So, in my opinion, the three states of the mind, emotions and economy of the single person and / or nucleus family must be addressed simultaneously in a holistic manner.  Because, if each state is not addressed simultaneously, only a temporary solution can be applied. Then, the single person and / or the nucleus family eventually re-enters the vicious state of MEED.

The MIM's Model of Empowerment, when applied thorougly, addresses the MEED state of being in a holistic mannner.  This holistic approach offers permanent solutions to the multi-dimensional challenges of the MEED state.
